Understanding Family Planning as a Life Journey Family planning is not a single decision, but a journey shaped by personal dreams, relationships, health, work, and social conditions. Many women and young families imagine having children, yet the reality of when and how to do so can feel uncertain or stressful. Across Europe, many people have fewer children than they originally hoped for, not because they do not want them, but because life circumstances make it difficult.
Family planning includes thinking about whether to have children, how many to have, and when the time feels right. These choices are deeply personal, but they are also influenced by wider factors such as job security, housing, and access to childcare, health information, and social expectations. Understanding these influences can help women make decisions that feel more informed, realistic, and aligned with their values.
The BUILDRES project recognises family planning as an important part of life that affects wellbeing, equality, and future stability for families and societies. This module builds on findings from the BUILDRES survey (2024), which showed that many young women and families across participating countries feel they lack clear and accessible information about fertility and family planning, while also facing real challenges in balancing work, personal goals, and family life.
